My name is Matt Sullivan and I have been playing guitar for 14 years and teaching for 6. I teach all styles of guitar, whether you like acoustic folk, want to rock out on your new electric guitar, or even want to try out a little jazz or classical. I have a plethora of musical knowledge, having studied music theory, history, composition, and technology at Drexel University. I am currently working on my Master of Music in composition at Temple University. I have learned from rock guitarists, classical guitarists, and jazz guitarists during this time and always strive to add to my skill set and knowledge base. Having these tools to help me teach is one thing, but above all, I strive to create a fun, relaxed environment in which to learn.
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY: In my lessons, I strive to create a comfortable, relaxed environment. I believe that, above all, in order to really learn, and to do well, a student must enjoy what they are doing, and that is my first goal. I create each student's curriculum individually, based on a combination of their current skill level, what it is they love most about music/guitar, and what I feel are the most important skills and knowledge to work on to get them to where they want to be. I like to incorporate examples to keep students interested, giving them a goal to strive for outside of just learning a scale or a certain technique. Students will always be more inclined to want to learn something if they know that once they get through it they'll be able to play that awesome tune by their favorite guitarist. I like to combine theory, technical skills, and musical examples into the span of a lesson, allowing each student to learn to be able to do new things, to understand why these things work the way they do and how they are incorporated into music, and to show them what can become of that information and skill set with a little bit of practice. All-in-all, I really do my best to bestow a greater love of music into all of my students.
One-on-one, in-home guitar instruction is the best way to learn how to play guitar. But for those who are outside
the Philadelphia and surrounding areas, I do offer online lessons using Skype. It's not the same as having me there, but it's pretty close.
